Data Science & AI/ML
Fast-Tracking the Future
The race to the future is on. Our adversaries are wielding data and advanced technologies as a competitive weapon. To outpace the threat, the Defense Department and Intelligence Community must rapidly transform into nimble, data-driven organizations and accelerate delivery of robust and reliable AI/ML capabilities for mission-critical systems. While there is much talk about emerging technologies, VTG is leading the charge of the doers. For us, it’s not just theory; we’ve already designed, tested, and deployed trustworthy AI/ML algorithms into tactical environments that are helping our customers maintain dominance in the battlespace…today. We’re hard at work helping our customers identify and solve their greatest digital challenges and accelerating delivery of AI/ML tools to capitalize on their most-promising operational opportunities. We’ve leveraged these emerging technologies and our deep expertise in data science and AI/ML to rapidly introduce intelligent solutions into new and existing systems for real-time responses to rapid mission changes.
Deploying Data-Rich Decision Making
Digital sensors in modern systems produce vast streams of data. At VTG, we’re leveraging the power of AI/ML to extract value from that data and transform it into insights that help our customers solve their most pressing problems. We bring intelligent decision-making solutions to warfighters by using trained data models that learn how to analyze complex tasks and solve predictive challenges. Together with high-performance cloud computing, these data-rich AI/ML analytic capabilities can project future trends, events, and behaviors to yield proactive systems and actionable insights that can be leveraged in next-generation warfare systems.
Harnessing Human-Machine Teaming
Artificial intelligence uses algorithms to develop systems that can replicate the cognitive thinking and decision-making skills of humans. AI/ML works best when it’s applied to automating predictable, repetitive tasks—including pattern recognition and anomaly detection—which frees analysts and operators to focus their critical-thinking skills on high-value missions. The innovation happens when you leverage human-machine teaming in command and control and decision support to improve operational effectiveness. VTG’s AI/ML experts develop solutions and technologies that allow warfighters to focus on mission success. We develop both supervised and unsupervised AI/ML algorithms and are applying reinforcement learning strategies to drive faster decisions, autonomous actions, and better system behaviors. VTG achieves success where others fail by maturing and delivering AI/ML architectures that ensure the availability of high-quality data in scalable computing environments followed by the rapid integration of those new solutions.

TRusted AI/ML
For mission success, AI/ML requires a level of trust not yet universal in today’s systems. It demands a culture shift and buy-in from the humans who are counting on those intelligent systems to protect and defend. How do you create that buy-in? It comes from the development of something VTG calls “Trusted AI/ML.” Unlike many of our competitors, VTG has experience building trusted AI/ML solutions and fostering effective human interaction with intelligent systems.
Trusted AI/ML is…
- Fair: avoids bias in AI/ML applications
- Accountable: adheres to a set of moral and ethical standards
- Secure: thwarts adversary interference throughout the AI/ML lifecycle
- Transparent: discloses the origins, decisions, and data behind the AI/ML application
- Explainable: reveals the why’s, how’s, and when’s of results that were achieved
- Robust: remains stable, predictable, and effective under certain conditions
Case Study
Unlocking Opportunity
The digital transformation of the U.S. Navy has yielded increasing quantities of data available for analysis. Developing solutions for the ingestion, storage, transformation, wrangling, and utilization of this data remains a critical challenge in realizing its true value. VTG has numerous programs focused on bringing AI/ML capabilities to the U.S. Navy to expand its competitive advantage in the modern battlespace, including AI/ML for the SWFTS Submarine Combat System. VTG has developed a data architecture and pipeline that is designed to bring data from disparate sources and security levels into a scalable development environment where we apply our experience in data analytics and AI/ML to develop mission-focused solutions for our customers. Our process utilizes automated wrangling and data catalogs to efficiently prepare the data sources and make the discovery process easier for developers and analysts.
VTG provides end-to-end AI/ML capabilities for our customers—from preparing systems and data to be “AI/ML ready” to developing customized front-end user interfaces to designing and deploying cutting-edge AI/ML applications like the Machine Learning Detection of Unexpected Shipping Activity (MEDUSA). MEDUSA leverages cutting-edge machine learning and probabilistic models to identify anomalous merchant vessel trajectories from Automatic Identification System (AIS) data. This AI/ML application, developed and deployed in less than 90 days, can classify merchant vessels as normal or anomalous as well as quantify the abnormality of a merchant vessel’s behavior in real-time based on transmitted AIS messages. MEDUSA showcases how AI/ML applications can be rapidly developed and deployed to aid naval operators and improve situational awareness.
